Plumbing Can Be Done By Homeowners
Just because your pipes are backed up or is in need of repair, calling a contractor can be quite expensive. There are many solutions to plumbing problems that homeowners can repair themselves with a little bit of basic knowledge of how it works. Simple clogged drains can be fixed easily by removing drain covers and cleaning debris out of the the line. For clogged lines that require rotor rooting, you can rent special tools at your local hardware store for a very inexpensive price. A little bit of patience will go a long way, remember to use the right tool for the job.
Other projects that may need a little more knowledge would include changing out a garbage disposal and bathroom fixtures. Garbage disposals require some extended skills that will make it easier to get the job done. This project will require routing a waste water line from the dishwasher and installing fittings in the kitchen sink for proper drainage. Replacing bathroom and kitchen sink fixtures can add value and increase your homes decor look as well. Changing out fixtures will require installing water lines and a drain line. Attaching these items before a sink is installed in a cabinet would be a great benefit since there is not much room to work under vanities and cabinets.
Basic Plumbing skills include knowing how water pressure and valves work. Having general knowledge and skills with wrenches and flexible water lines will make the project easy to work with. Advanced skills with copper pipe will require the knowledge of knowing how to "sweat" pipes safely with out starting a fire. This process is used with a torch and heating the copper pipe and using flux with solder to join fittings together. This technique is mostly used in older homes since copper is relatively more expensive compared to other types of plumbing materials.

More efficient Plumbing supplies such as Pex and PVC are being installed more frequently since they are more flexible and easier to work with than copper lines. PVC pipe is used with primer and plastic cement which dries in minutes. Pex water lines use special tools and fasteners and are easy to use. The next time you have a pipe or fixture repair do not be afraid to tackle it yourself and save some money.
